What exactly is Greenwashing?

By 22 June 2023July 3rd, 2023No Comments4 min read

It’s a buzz term that seems to be unavoidable when discussing renewable practices, but what exactly is Greenwashing?
Essentially, it’s when there are false or exaggerated claims about the environmental friendliness or sustainability of a product, service, or organisation. It’s seen as a deceptive marketing and sales technique whereby by businesses claim to be more environmentally responsible than they actually are.

The rise of greenwashing is due to the growing demand for proof of eco-friendly credentials in almost all business sectors. Understandably, customers, clients, applicants and partners want to align with organisations who are making strides towards safeguarding the climate.
There’s no harm in claiming to be powered by solar if no one can actually see your roof, right?

Wrong… Greenwashing is considered a poor practice for several reasons:
Misinformation: Greenwashing misleads consumers by providing false or incomplete information about a company’s environmental practices. This misrepresentation undermines the ability of consumers to make informed choices and can lead to the perception that a product or company is more sustainable than it actually is.

It Undermines Legitimate Eco-friendly Efforts: Greenwashing can reduce trust in genuinely environmentally responsible businesses. When companies engage in deceptive practices, it becomes harder for consumers to identify and support organizations that are making meaningful, legitimate efforts to reduce their environmental impact.

It Slows Down Progress: By presenting a false image of sustainability, greenwashing can hinder the overall progress towards achieving sustainable development goals. It can create complacency among businesses and the public, leading to a reduced sense of urgency and a lack of motivation to adopt more genuinely sustainable practices.

It Allows For A Lack of Accountability: Greenwashing allows companies to avoid taking real action to minimize their environmental impact. Instead of implementing meaningful changes in their operations or products, they rely on superficial marketing tactics that create an illusion of sustainability without quantifiable results. This lack of accountability perpetuates unsustainable practices and inhibits the transition to a more eco-friendly economy.

What happens if a company gets caught Greenwashing?

If a company is exposed for greenwashing, the reputational damage can be difficult to recover from. Customers, clients, partners and employees inherently place their trust in a business when they choose to engage with them, if they subsequently find out that the company had been dishonest then they understandably feel cheated, asking themselves “what else have they been misled on?”.

Consumers are increasingly aware of greenwashing practices and are quick to share information through social media, etc. This negative publicity is harmful to a company’s brand image, meaning a drop in consumer trust, lost sales, and in extreme cases potential legal action.
How do you rise above the greenwashers?

This is the big question – how do you prove that your sustainability efforts are unquestionable in a world of uncertainty.
Stats & Evidence: Do your best to provide related statistics, photo evidence or intricate process explanations of how your particular systems work. How has your business benefitted from a carbon reduction perspective? How much have you saved on energy spend? What technology has been used? Most greenwashers cannot provide this evidence (at least not accurately) as they don’t have the necessary understanding or processes to produce it.

Certification: Collaborate or employ the services of a carbon reduction company such as ourselves. We’ll certify any carbon reduction work carried out for you with our unique Carbon Conscious or Carbon Neutral trademarks – these can be used throughout your marketing and sales campaigns and can link directly to us for assurance.

To foster genuine sustainability, it is important for businesses to prioritize transparency, adopt responsible and quantifiable practices, and provide accurate information that is verifiable.
