Recent news reports have indicated that up to 64% of UK SME’s are consciously engaging in tactics to increase their environmental sustainability. Whether that consists of switching to recycled paper resources, eliminating email printing, or embracing renewable technology they’re all much needed steps in the right direction.

Reducing carbon emissions will be reflected upon as one of the biggest influencers of reducing the impact of climate change – but before you can cut back, you need to understand your current impact. Whether you’re a business or an individual, measuring your carbon footprint is the essential first step toward meaningful reductions. Here’s how to get started.

Why Measurement Matters

The saying “you can’t reduce what you haven’t measured” is especially true when it comes to carbon emissions. Without an accurate picture of where your emissions come from, it’s impossible to set realistic reduction goals. Measuring allows you to:

  • Identify key sources of emissions
  • Track progress over time
  • Make informed decisions about sustainable alternatives
  • Demonstrate accountability and transparency

Step 1: Understand What Makes Up Your Carbon Footprint

Your carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) you generate, typically measured in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e). It includes:

  • Direct emissions (Scope 1): From sources you own or control, such as vehicle fuel consumption and onsite energy use.
  • Indirect emissions (Scope 2): From purchased electricity, heating, and cooling.
  • Other indirect emissions (Scope 3): From sources not owned or directly controlled, such as supply chain activities, travel, and waste disposal.

Step 2: Gather Your Data

Start by collecting data on activities that contribute to emissions. This might include:

  • Energy bills (gas, electricity, and heating)
  • Fuel consumption stats from vehicles
  • Business travel and commuting habits
  • Waste generation & management
  • Supply chain and procurement choices

This step can be relatively confusing and can take some time – remember we’re here to help. We’re have the knowledge, experience and tools to extrapolate accurate data from your processes and documentation without interrupting your daily duties.

Step 3: If You’d Like to Go it Alone, Consider Measurement Tools and Standards

There are many organizations who provide calculators and frameworks to help with carbon accounting. We can’t vouch for the accuracy of all of these, so we won’t attempt to. But doing due-diligence on their system’s compilation, data sources, and overall integrity in relation to national and international benchmarks can only serve to assure you of accurate results.

Our own system takes influence from nationally recognised ISO standards, considers current frameworks and has a robust cross referencing process that ensures we’re delivering the most accurate date to you possible.

Step 4: Set Reduction Targets

Once you’ve measured your carbon footprint, set goals to cut emissions. Strategies might include:

  • Switching to renewable energy sources
  • Reducing travel or opting for lower-carbon transport modes
  • Improving energy efficiency in the workplace
  • Choosing suppliers with sustainable practices
  • Minimizing waste and increasing recycling efforts
  • And much more!

It’s always a pleasure to create a bespoke, manageable and measurable action plan for our clients – some last a few short months, others become indefinite as they strive towards net-zero operation.

Step 5: Monitor and Improve

Measurement isn’t a one-time process—it requires continuous tracking and improvement. Regularly reassessing your emissions ensures progress and helps adjust strategies over time.

By making carbon measurement a priority, businesses can take real steps toward sustainability. The journey to lower emissions starts with understanding where you stand – so the sooner you start measuring, the sooner you can start making a difference.
